Welcome, 7th grade parents. My name is Mr. Lasco and I will be one of the three 7th grade Science teachers this year. I am really looking forward to spending time with your children this year, introducing them to the wonders of Science. We will be covering Life Science this year. We will start with the Scientific Method and move on to Genetics. Next, we will cover Living Things, from simple bacteria up to the most complex animals. And yes, we will dissect frogs. I have that tentatively scheduled for the end of December. After the Winter Break, we will finish with Birds, Mammals and Animal Behavior. We will shift gears the first week of February and start our study of Human Anatomy and Systems. The last week of April we will begin the last part of our study, Ecology. I would highly recommend that you use the Homework and Lesson Plans sections of my Weebly account to help your child keep current on his/her lessons. They should have this information written down in their agendas also. Thank you for choosing to send your children here to us at Ben Franklin. I am certain that we will have another successful year.

I wanted to let you how most sections are covered here in 7th grade Science. The students will be given a reading assignment to do at home. They are to read the assignment and then organize thier notes for class. The next day, the students will copy down the key terms and definitions from the board. The teacher will use this time to check homework and take role. Next, the class will take a quiz on the previous night's reading. They may use their notes. We will then begin the class discussion on the new material. After the discussion, the students will be given a worksheet reviewing the material covered in class. That worksheet is due the next day. We will accomplish two or three labs each month. The instructions for most labs will be sent home with the students the day before the lab is accomplished. Students will prepare their lab write up in their science lab books that night. Students who have not completed the write up will have to do so before the lab the next day and may not get to participate. The lab instructions also include questions that must be answered after the lab is completed. Those will be due the next day. Exams will be given at the end of each chapter. If you have any questions, please feel free to drop me an e-mail at [email protected]

I've had a bunch of questions about the logins and homework assignments. At this time, we continue to have difficulty accessing the new book. Mrs. Oram has found a way to access the old ones, however, so for time being, we're going to follow this process. Logon using lasco7 and the password chargers1. The system uses 16 books instead of one so, instead of page numbers, you will see a stream of three numbers. For example, Friday's reading assignment will read,16-1-1, which means the 16th book, 1st chapter 1st Section. As for the reading homework, I encourage the students to print up the Guided Reading page of the text. This page can be found on the first page of each section and is intended to be filled out as they read the material. Students that do not wish to do this can of course take notes on the reading. I suggest using an outline format, where they write down the title of each part of the reading, taking notes section by section. I hope this clears up any lingering concerns. Please feel free to e-mail me if you are having any further difficulties and I will get back with you as soon as I can. The first two weeks of school are kind of crazy here.

Over the weekend, the password for the online book was changed. I will speak to all the students about this. Please tell your children that they should not personalize the password. It makes it impossible for anyone else to gain access to the book. I realize this was probably done in error, so I reset the password to chargers1. Thank you.

I have changed the procedures for the traditional class. They will now receive a copy of the night's guided reading assignment from me the day that they are to do the reading. This is not to be considered additional homework. It is a way to assist the students with their note taking skills.
